How to Know It Is Time To Replace Your Car’s Transmission

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Overhauling or replacing a transmission is expensive. This is partly due to the cost of the assembly (in the case of a replacement) and partly because of the specialized training required to take it apart, clean it, and reassemble it.

Most auto repair shops will agree to install a replacement part, but will refuse to perform a complete overhaul. In fact, many shops that specialize in tranny repairs will strongly recommend a replacement. This is because of the enormous amount of time and effort involved with an overhaul. The problem is that a new model can cost ,000 or more. Even a remanufactured assembly can cost nearly as much.

The good news is that many of the problems are fixable without overhauling your transmission. In this article, I’ll describe the most common problems drivers experience and how they can be resolved. I’ll also explain the process mechanics go through when performing an overhaul.

Leaking Fluids

One of the first signs of a leak is a small pool of reddish fluid on the ground directly underneath your tranny. Repairs may not be necessary if the leak is small and you’re willing to keep a close eye on the fluid levels. You’ll need to check the levels consistently; a loss of fluid can quickly lead to expensive damage.

if it is a substantial leak you should have a mechanic look at it right away. He’ll put your vehicle on a lift to examine the assembly from underneath. Once he identifies the leaks, he’ll reseal them. Most seals and gaskets can be resealed without the need to remove your car transmission. The exception is the front seal; if it forms a leak, there’s a high likelihood that your mechanic will need to remove the assembly to fix it. That can become expensive.

Odd Shifting Behavior

Under normal driving conditions, shifting should occur fluidly. However, when parts become worn, your transmission will begin to behave strangely. For example, hard shifting may occur where gear changes are accompanied by a jolt. Or, you might hear a high-pitched whine.

These are red flags – they indicate that there is something wrong. If your mechanic can address these issues early, he may be able to replace the responsible parts without taking the assembly out of your vehicle. If these problems are left unchecked, they will usually lead to bigger – and more costly – problems down the road. An overhaul or replacement may be necessary eventually.

What Happens During An Overhaul?

During an overhaul, your transmission is removed from your car and completely taken apart. Each piece is laid out, inspected, and cleaned. Parts that have become worn past the point of being useful are replaced. Also replaced are most of the seals, bands, and gaskets. Mechanics will typically discard your torque converter and install a remanufactured unit. Once everything has been inspected, cleaned, or replaced, the entire assembly is reassembled and placed back into your car. An overhaul is normally a long, costly, and labor-intensive process.

The takeaway is this: be aware of fluid leaks and odd behavior. If you notice them, have a mechanic take a look as soon as possible. You’ll reduce further damance and therefore reduce the chances you’ll need a overhauled, remanufactured, or new transmission.

Must do maintenance tips for your car

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Taking care of cars is one of the things that people have a problem with. One reason for this is because are built so good.  They run so smoothly people have a hard time realizing they need maintenance. But just like all things here on earth you still need to take great care of it.You will have more problems with it if you neglect to take care of it.So here are some important things you need to do to your car to keep it running well.

Obviously, first thing is to have regular tune ups.  When people bring their cars into my San Diego auto repair shop I try to emphasize this to them.Regular tune ups can do a lot of good to your car.Well, obviously, it can keep all the parts in very good condition.  But it also will help you spot problems early. And just like anything else detection of early problems would lead to easier solution of the problem. When it comes to car problems you would want to detect it as early as possible. Because once it gets hard to fix it gets expensive.

Next thing to keep in mind and do is to regularly change the oils of your car.Not being able to do this will affect the performane of your engine. An engine that is affected would lead to more problems.Failure of a smog test is one result of these problems. Whenever I have a car fail in my San Diego smog check shop a lot of times I see they never changed their oil regularly.  Plus if you don’t change your oil you can ruin your engine.

The brakes are also one of the most important things that you should always maintain when it comes to your cars. Brakes are a part of your car that can get expensive to fix when broken. The easiest solution to this problem is to not let it break and just maintain it.  So I have all my clients of my San Diego brake shop make sure they maintain their brakes.

Those are a few things you should always keep in mind when you own a car.Regular maintenance will do your car good in the long run.

Benefits of installing new windows

Friday, October 30th, 2009

One thing about most people is that when they spend on something they look at it as an expenditure. And that is really true most of the time anyway. But there are also times when spending money is not what you can call a cost but it can be an investment.  One of those ways that people have a hard time looking at as an investment are replacment windows. In this article we would be talking about reasons as to why new windows can be considered as an investment.

First of all replacing your windows is a great investment because it saves energy.  With my San Diego replacement windows company I try to emphasize that a lot.People do not realize the fact that old windows do waste a lot of energy. Because in the summer it gets hot so you use more air conditioning. In the winter it gets colder so you use more heater.  While a replacement window helps keep the temperature milder.  This will save you a lot of money in energy costs.

The next reason why we can consider new windows to be an investment is because it can help in raising the value of your homes.  When we do a home with our San Diego glass company we see first hand how it does this.Usually if a homeowner tries to sell his or her house new windows can raise his/her house’s value. The reason being is because people know that these new windows can save a lot on energy costs.  Plus it looks nicer.

So those are some of the great investments for your home.Another good investment for your house is a frameless glass shower.  With my San Diego frameless glass shower company whenever we install a glass shower we see immediate improvement in the home.It can improve the house in terms of looks and the value of the house itself.

Hopefully you will realize that there things that are worth the money. If you spend wisely then you can really buy some good investment for your house. With the recession on our heels right now we must look for the right things to spend our money on.Or you might as well throw your money away.

Winter Tires – FAQ

Winter Tires & Snow Tires - Common Questions

Do I really need snow tires?

New cars are usually sold today with All Season tires.  All season tires are also a more popular purchase than winter or summer tires in general.  For the most part this is a good solution for drivers for the reason that many parts of the country do not see difficult winter weather conditions and even those areas of the country that do experience substantial snow and ice still have the majority of the year without those conditions.  Late spring, summer and early fall do not call for snow tires even in colder regions.  The connotation of an “All Season” tire is that it is engineered for all seasons.  This is undoubtedly true for most people who live in the lower half of the U.S. This may be misleading to those living in mountainous or northern areas that get substantial snow and ice.

Why is a winter tire important?

Winter tires grab in snow and ice by design. Unlike an all season or summer tire, a snow tire is formed with a softer, more flexible rubber formula more suitable to cold weather.  A couple of the more common winter tires are the Blizztak by Bridgestone and the Ultra Grip series by Goodyear Tires.  Given rubber properties, the winter tire can keep its traction abilities gripping the road and biting into snow and ice. A summer or all season tire will have a propensity to become more brittle and inflexible in cold temperatures and therefore it will slide much more rapidly.  The capacity to bite into snow and ice and to conform to the road is crucial in the winter to preclude getting stuck, to steer and corner effectively and to stop.  A tire not engineered for the cold can not be effective in winter cornering and stopping.  Many new cars have anit-lock brakes, electronic stabliization and all wheel drive to help control the vehicle. These systems however depend on the tires. They are only as good as your tires.  Think of an emergency room equipped with all the state-of-the-art and best equipment ready to take care of any emergency thrust upon it.  However, this ER is staffed by only first year med students.  All the greatest tools in the world will not save lives without the essential expertise of the doctor.  Similarly, great safety and control systems are useless on a car with bad tires.

All-season tires are designed to function in varied but general weather conditions: dry roads and rain and in moderate temperatures.  They are not constructed for specific and harsh weather conditions.  If tires were vehicles, an all season would be a family sedan while a winter tire would be a Hummer.  You may possibly drive through a snow storm in a family sedan but a Hummer would be much safer.  It’s the same way with tires.  You may get through the winter on an all season tire but you will your chances of not getting stuck and of being able to control your vehicle are much greater with a good winter tire.

Can I mix tires using two snow tires and two all season tires?

In an effort to reduce cost, some people try using snow tires only on the drive wheels of their vehicle.  This is an ineffective and possibly risky solution.  This may give you the confidence in selected situations of having control however this is an illusion and the false confidence may lead to reckless results. Putting snow tires in the front on a front wheel drive may allow better starts and stopping but it places you in danger of fishtailing around turns.  The rear wheels will not have sufficient traction to negotiate the turns your front wheels initiate.  Similarly and perhaps more dangerous, putting snow tires on the rear wheels of a rear wheel drive car will allow better starts but will do nothing for steering or braking.  It is always advised to install snow tires in a complete set of four.

What About Leaving Snow Tires On All Year Long?

This is not really a good plan. Remember, the rubber in snow tires is a softer compound than that used in all season and summer tires.  That means they will wear down much earlier than a tire designed for warmer driving conditions.  They are made for cold weather and wet and slippery roads.  Hot pavement is not good for their soft rubber compound.  This is crucial for a couple reasons.  First you will end up replacing your tires more frequently simply from wear.  The biggest reason to keeping winter tires on your vehicle all year is to save by not buying more tires. Unfortunately, faster wear on the snow tires means that you will need to replace tires more frequently.  Secondly, a deep tread is imperative for a snow tire to be most useful.  The winter tire “bites” into ice and snow because of carefully engineered treads.  Meanwhile water and slush is pushed from under the tire via deep channels in the tread design.  As summer driving conditions wear on the winter tire, it loses its ability to grip into snow and ice in the winter.

Another reason to change tires as soon as the snow clears for good is for a more comfortable ride.  All season tires and summer tires among other things are built for a comfortable ride.  Snow tires are not.  All season and summer tires are designed to muffle noise from the road – snow tires however are not engineered this way and they tend to be quite noisy.  Since you are using a good snow tire, you can put a summer tire on your car for better performance.  Therefore you will be driving on tires designed specifically for your driving conditions.  This way you can accomplish better traction and a smoother and quieter ride in all seasons.

Remounting tires twice a year is costly and inconvenient.  Is there another alternative?

This can be a problem.  I have never met anybody who enjoys sitting in the waiting room of a tire reseller drinking bad coffee and reading old magazines.  Re-mounting and balancing charges cost a lot over the years making this expensive.  There is a better choice.  Simply get another set of wheels to mount your snow tires on.  You can then simply unbolt your tires when the weather breaks and put your summer tires on.  You can do this in under 30 minutes in your garage.  No need for remounting, waiting for hours or drinking bad coffee.  You can determine how much you want to spend using this method.  Some propose that you buy some old wheels from a salvage yard for your snow tires.  This may be a good idea but by the time you pay for mounting it may not save you much money.

At least one online tire reseller will sell you a package of wheels and snow tires with mounting and balancing done free.  Find out more here: Save Money and Time with Winter Tire Packages Given this you could easily get new wheels that specifically fit your vehicle and all the mounting hardware at a cost as good or better than getting a set of salvage wheels. The salvage wheels may or may not specifically fit your vehicle whereas the new wheels were made for your vehicle.  Be certain that the wheel is a good fit for your car and also be certain that the mounting hardware is also a good fit.  If you wish, you can also get more expensive wheels especially if you are likely to keep cars for a long time or you tend to buy the same cars.  Regardless, you should be able to sell these wheels with the car at a premium or sell them on Ebay or through a classified ad when you are finished with them.  In any case you will not need to remount tires a couple times a year and the wheels will pay for themselves in a few seasons by saving the remounting charges.

So What is the Bottom Line?

If your area gets significant snowfall, plan to buy a good set of winter tires.  A single fender bender, a missed sales call or a missed day at work could cost you as much as a set of tires and the tires can be used for several years.  The concern of your safety is also very important.  Being stuck in the snow, failing to stop in an emergency and sliding through a turn can be more than a financial consideration.  Your safety is worth the investment.  You can find a beneficial package deal including wheels that will pay for itself in a few seasons.  Make the investment and drive safely and with confidence in the snow.

What can one do to clean their house’s windows

Friday, October 30th, 2009

One of the best things you can do for your home is clean and clear windows. But it is not enough to just clean them.Usually, those windows that have been cleaned before using harsh chemicals have residue left in them. These residues won’t wear off easily. That would result to a window with a lot of streaks despite all your hardwork.  So here is a way that you can have your windows cleaned without streaks.

If you plan to clean those windows of yours then you would need some things that can remove those streaks.  Obviously as a San Diego window cleaning company my advice would be to get a good window cleaning company.  But if you want to do it yourself you can get rid of the streaks.  You are going to have to use a good cleaner to cut through all the residue of those chemicals.

So here’s a good cleaner that you can prepare by yourself. And it would be good for you since it is not expensive. And since the things you need to prepare it are also natural then it would also be good for the environment. In my San Diego window washing service I use something similar.  You would take a quarter cup of vinegar. Then you have to mix it with half a teaspoon of liquid soap. This combination can be an effective remover of window streaks.

Now if you have very dirty windows that combination won’t completely work. You have to add another trick to this combination so that it would be effective.  Of course I have to use it sometimes in my Carlsbad window cleaning service and it works like a charm. The trick would be to warm the vinegar up.  This will allow it to clean those extra dirty windows that it normally wouldn’t be able to.

So you can use this combination of natural ingredients to clean those very dirty windows of yours. It is a time proven combination of a very good cleaner of windows.

Winter Tires & Snow Tires

Winter Tires & Snow Tires

Snow tires can be a hassle and a major expense but if you live in an area that receives lots of snow, they are a necessity. All-season tires may will not provide you the level of safety and performance that a winter tire will provide on snow and ice. Find out how to save both time and money while improving your safety on the roads this winter. This article provides the essential information you need to know when considering snow tires this season and for the life of your vehicle.

All season tires are fine for those climates that don’t have significant snow and ice but harsh winter weather presents conditions that all season tires are not designed for. Don’t risk your safety and the safety of your family with inadequate tires. There are many winter tire options out there but a couple of the more popular brands are the Blizzak by Bridgestone Tires or the Eagle Ultra Gripper series by Goodyear Tires.

Time, inconvenience and cost however are significant factors in having tires mounted each season. There is probably no one reading that would not like to minimize each of these factors for winter tires. I’ll explain how to do this in the next section.

Time and Money Saver When Buying Snow Tires
Forget the wait at the tire store, forget carrying tires back and forth to be mounted, and forget about all those mounting charges!

The importance of snow tires can not be ignored and I want to tell you about why snow tires are important. But let’s face it, many people who read this want to know first how to save money and save time so we’ll address that first. The next section will be why it is important to go ahead and invest in actual snow tires.

The obvious key to saving money is finding the best price – but where is that?  Here is the secret that few people have found out about but can not only save you money but also time and a lot of hassle.  Most people don’t think about buying tires online because they have to be mounted etc and they are just used to going to the local tire dealer.  Online tire shopping is a great way to get new tires but especially for winter tires or snow tires.

Typically if you live up north you do not want to have tires mounted twice a year – putting winter tires on and taking them off again when the snow clears.  One solution was to head to the local salvage yard and find some old rims to have your snow tires mounted to.  For about the same price you can now have new wheels with your tires.  You will most likely save money, you will eliminate the hassle and you will certainly save time with a wheels and tires winter package online.

Time is wasted driving from tire dealer to tire dealer and then sitting in a dirty waiting room drinking coffee that looks more like Castrol than Foldiers. There is a solution for all that time and expense. There is no need to drive to a tire dealer. You can sit at your computer and find the best tire for your vehicle. Find a wealth of information including strenuous test results, consumer surveys and owner reviews. Pair the tires you chose with a set of wheels. The complete package, ready to bolt onto your vehicle, will be delivered to your door. Mounting and balancing are free! Your snow tires and wheels can be on your vehicle in less than 30 minutes.

Choosing a tires and wheels winter package is easy.  The online retailer will ask a little about your vehicle and make appropriate suggestions for you.  In my case they recomended the lowest cost package.

Change your tires with the seasons with a Preferred Winter Tire & Wheel Package from Tire Rack.

However, you can easily choose your preferred combination of snow tires and rims by building your own package.  The process could not be easier and you will have tire test results, user survey results and owner reviews at your fingertips so you can make the best choice weighted either toward economy or performance.

Remember, these wheels and tire winter packages come with:
Free mounting and balancing
Access to virtually any tire you choose
Wheels made to fit your vehicle
All necessary hardware and caps for putting tires on
Rims and tires mounted brought to your door ready to put on your car or truck
No waiting at the tire dealer
No need for salvage rims

Save yourself hours at the tire dealer and hundreds of dollars on mounting charges over the years.

The Importance of Snow Tires will be covered in a later article or check the resources below.

History of Mercedes Benz

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Gottlieb Daimler & Karl Benz set up Mercedes Benz in the 1880’s. It is said that these two men in fact had never met each other! They worked independently of each other and Daimler looked after the racing cars. A dealer from Austria by the name of Emil Jellinek got the cars to races and was very successful. He named the cars Mercedes after his daughter.
Eventually Jellinek placed a large order from Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. They were in agreement that Jellnek could modify the designs.

In 1886 Benz built his first motorized tricycle. The first production car was the Benz Velo in 1894 which competed in the first recorded car race, Rouen to Paris. It was in 1895 that Benz first built his truck.

It is said that Daimler never got pleasure from driving! In March 1990 he died leaving overall control of the company to Wilhelm Mayback. By November of that year they had produced a special car, the Mercedes which was lighter and smaller than the average car of the day and was able to reach top speeds off 55mph.

At the start of the First World War both factories had to turn their hand to the production of war materials, however both of them reverted back to the production of cars after the war. However with fuel very scarce plus a 15% luxury tax car production was affected badly.

The economy in Germany grew more desperate and a new Mercedes would cost as much as 25 million marks. It is interesting to see that 15 million cars were registered throughout the world in 1923 and over 80% of these were from the UK and over half were in fact Fords. The Mercedes was considered to be very expensive.

In 1926 a new insignia was designed in the shape of a three pointed star wreathed with laurel signifying the merger of Benz and DMG.

In the 1930’s their biggest and most prestigious car was introduced, called the 770 Grosser and was powered by an 8 cylinder, 7.six ltr engine. The cars in this era produced great success on the racing circuits.

In 1945 after the war, the plant at Unterturkheim which had been bombed out had to put their car production on hold and instead produced trailers for bicycles.

However in 1946 production of cars was resumed and by 1949 a diesel version of the 170 was being made which became a best seller.

Alongside all of these elegant car models a number of vans have been produced which are used a great deal for Mercedes van leasing. One such van is the Mercedes Sprinter which has the reputation for being highly reliable and fairly economical.

By the 1990’s Mercedes became the first manufacturer in the world to fit a 4 valve diesel engine into a car. This new engine offers enhanced performance & smoothness which is all that the Mercedes name stands for.

Standard Auto Repair – How Essential Is It?

Friday, October 30th, 2009

The general rule about auto repair in general is that they do not cost a lot of money but the charges vary depending on whether you repair your vehicle in Hollywood or in Texas. Click through here for more information on motor cycle insurance .

If you get hold of the right place, auto repair general will nto cause you too much hassle.

So a word of advice is to maintain all your vehicle repair details in one folder for future use. Many car owners take things like brake pad replacements for granted. This is where many of them go wrong! Auto repair in general does not burden you if you know when and how the replacements and repairs need to be done. You can obtain more information on motorcycle insurance companies here.

Another such thing that is frequently overlooked is the timing belt repair. It is no big deal as we look at it to be. So unless you replace the timing belt at the proper time, you may create your own formula for disaster with the vehicle engine going bad.You can gain tons of valuable information about motor cycle insurance here.

Another category of auto repair in general has to do with replacing fuel pump and cleaning the injectors. Many websites point out that this is something that can be done by the vehicle owner but I’d caution you against it as it should not be attempted unless you are an expert in the field.

Auto repair in general can even mean menial tasks such as changing engine oil. This is a very simple job that is usually performed after every couple of thousands of miles.

If your car needs to undergo some major auto repair in general, it is always best to weigh the feasibility of replacing parts or buying a new car. These decisions should almost always be based on the finances involved. Therefore, being open to suggestions and being open to auto repairs in general will save you a lot of trouble on the way.

People worry for no reason at all. Auto repair in general can be as small as costing a few dollars, sometimes. Afterall, automobiles are machines. So it’s quite obvious that they need repairs from time to time. So next time you are faced with an auto repair in general, do not worry!

Emmas Handy Guidelines To Follow When You Are Purchasing Used Ice Cream Trucks

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Operating an ice cream truck could be a fun and profitable business.  You get to be your own CEO and the products that you sell will bring folk joy.  The costs of new ice cream wagons can be very high so it can pay to save money and purchase a used ice cream van if you’re on asmall tight| humble] budget.  There are plenty of different things to take a look at when purchasing a second user ice cream van.  Remember the wagon is only a good deal if performs well and won’t have lots of down time and correct bills.

You should usually have the used ice cream truck checked before making a purchase.  Sometimes the truck will have a warranty or extended service plan which is transferable to a new owner, but the majority of the time used ice cream trucks are sold as is.  There are separate service plans available for sale if the van you are interested in does not come with one.

One of the easiest places to find used ice cream vans is online.  This lets you search through many various models and compare features and prices.  When shopping online you have the capability to limit your search to your local area or to search across the nation.  Occasionally it will pay to search the whole country as shipping could be a lot less than you imagine.  If you buy your truck hereabouts it is often a good idea to take it for a test drive if at all possible .

When purchasing used ice cream trucks it is important that you have a clear idea of what you can afford before going shopping.  Make sure you include the final cost of the car including the vehicle itself, shipping, insurance, tax, and title transfer costs.  If you don’t have all of the money available there are plenty of corporations that may offer you financing on a used ice cream truck.  Make efforts to have your loan pre-approved before you start shopping.
